The first stroke

Specifically, the shaft that runs through the diaphragms and the central chamber that houses the air valve. The air valve's job is to direct the pressurised air to the rear of diaphragm number one, which can force the diaphragm to shift out of the axial plane. The first diaphragm's press stroke drives the liquid out of the pump. During this time, diaphragm number two is engaged in a suction stroke. Atmospheric pressure forces the liquid to the suction side as the air behind diaphragm number two is forced out into the atmosphere. The suction ball valve must be moved away from its seat to let liquid into the chamber beneath the ball valve.

The second stroke

Once the first pressurised diaphragm has completed its stroke, the airflow is diverted to the rear of the second diaphragm via an air valve. Compressed air pushes diaphragm two away from the centre block, causing diaphragm one to be drawn in. The ball valve discharging the pump is pushed off its seat in chamber two, while the opposite happens in chamber 1. Once the stroke is complete, the air valve redirects air to the first diaphragm's back to begin the process again.
